Calling all fern experts

I'm planning a part shade border of fatsia japonica, ferns, alarm, runners, hosta etc. The ferns I can go for due to allergies are Polystichum. Does anyone have any experience with these? The area I am currently planing gets very wet in the winter so I will be trying to add manure etc to the soil to help it along but need to make sure that I buy a nice fern that will thrive. I am down to neolabatum, makinoi, minimum and setiferum. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Montyfangirl ..... I'm also a fan of his image

I grow Polystichum setiferum 'Herrenhausen' .... it's a lovely plant.

It's in a shady / moist spot with trilliums, erythroniums, some painted lady ferns, and Eomecon chionantha. All of the other plants disapear over the winter so it's nice to still have the green of the setiferum. I do trim all the old leaves off late spring as they are starting to look tatty by then.

Lost (in my opinion) one of the best Polystichums in 2009/10 in very low temperatures ; (P.setiferum 'Proliferum') .

Was just starting to develop a short trunk after many years growth , contrasting with semi-evergreen glaucous blue/green foliage .
    Why I didn't lift it I'll never know !
