Magnolia Stellata - what's the problem?

Hi all, my Magnolia Stellata has a problem as something is attaching it - see pictures.  Its not all of them but quite a few, any ideas?  Thank you for your help.  Tony.

  • Is it buds that are on some of the sturdier branches/twigs that are being attacked ... or at least buds that are in the vicinity of the sturdier ones?  If so I suspect birds or possibly squirrels.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Hi there, the affected buds are mostly on the outside branches on one side where various small birds (tits, sparrows etc) stop when feeding from a nearby hanging feeder. I have not seen a squirrel but you never know.

                     Thanks Tony.

Most probably birds I think. Could be they are taking the fluffy bits of buds for nesting purposes - I'll have to go out and look at mine!

North East Somerset - Clay soil over limestone
  • Probably  correct, strange it has'nt happened before  i'll keep my eye out.

                Thanks Tony.
