New allotment holder alert!

  • Hope this helps!

I believe that a recent (2015?) law in Scotland provides/confirmed(?) that 250 square metres is standard size for lettings of allotments. I understand that prospective plot holders may ask for less if a full sized plot is too much for them.

At one time in Scotland an allotment's area should not exceed one acre but this was reduced to 0.25 acre (40 poles/perches/rods).

Traditionally, an allotment garden was and may still be measured as being 10 rods, which I think equates to about 250 square metres.

If the allotment is private I suppose it could be any size that is agreed between the holder and owner of the land.

The bits on Scottish law given above come from 1) a briefing paper published online by the Scottish Allotments Garden Society (SAGS) and 2) a short item about the new law in the Amateur Gardener 4 July 2015 (page 26).

PS My allotment is in England and I am researching allotment development and management in England. My knowledge of allotment practice in Scotland is limited so please take the above as needing confirmation!
