There is a lovely clematis called pixie,I think, which likes to trail over the edge of a large pot. It grows to about a metre, is evergreen and has sweet little pale green/yellow flowers in spring. It seems to cope with wind and doesn't seem to mind semi shade and requires little maintenance.
Just in case anyone wonders what happened...I've planted 3 Dicentras at the back with an underplanting of Ajuga Reptans to cover the soil. When my local GC has their hostas for sale I'm going to add a couple of those and possibly try to trail some ivy over the sides. Magazine subscribers might recognise the plant combination ;-)
