Please help identify mysterious seeds
I found some mysterious seeds growing on a tree in my town (UK). The seed pods look like spiky brown baubles and were dangling from strips of bark. It looked like someone had hung them up!
As you can see from my pictures I cut one of the pods open to see if it contained an elf fetus or some other magical creature, however it appears to contain only fluff.
Any help identifying these seed pods and the tree they came from would be greatly appreciated!

Platanus occidentalis (American plane) aka Buttonwood, I think.
I think it’s London Plane, Platanus x hispanic.
Well, we agree on the Genus Bob!
They're close relations but I think you are right Asarum as buttonwoods are rare in the UK.
I'm saying London Plane ........... I remembering doing the very same thing with the seed cases years ago
I got the seeds not far from what is now called Tate Britain but back then was just The Tate Gallery.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I'd say London, the car park at Sainsburys is littered with bits of those.
In the sticks near Peterborough
We used to call them itchy balls and what we called the itchy ball trees, I know now as London plane.
Thanks guys!
