Dendrobium Nobile orchid - when to remove old shoot
in Plants
I have a Dendrobium Nobile orchid where the current shoot is some 50cm tall.
Now a new shoot of 12cm is growing from the base.
At what point do I remove the old shoot and support the new.

Most orchids are best left to do their own thing. If the main stem becomes too long, it will probably start to produce keikis ( baby plants with their own aerial roots), so it is worthwhile preserving it. Some flower on new growth, some on last year's but I never prune my Dends ( I have about 300) unless the shoot is completely dessicated and basically dead. Even then the decaying matter is recycled by the plant. You can see my orchid photos on Flickr. Best of luck - Ian
