Plants for westerly facing garden

Good morning everyone

i would like some advice with regards sunlight/ shade when choosing plants for my balcony.

I live in a easterly facing apartment with balcony. The design of the building means that through winter the balcony gets little direct sunlight however once we move into summer it gets sunlight(at summers peak) from 3 -4 pm.

my question is how do I decide which plants are suitable based on amount of direct sunlight? Is the amount based on summer only , or is this in combination with spring ?

any advice appreciated .

I expect light level requirements are for the active growing season when leaves are photosynthesising, flowers opening and wood ripening.

A lot will also depend on how high up your are and where you are in the country as that affects exposure to cold and drying winds which will affect your plants more than at ground level.
