Propagating crocuses

My crocuses are starting to look a little crowded. When do you divide them?

I've heard you should do it in autumn after the first hard frost, but I don't know if I would be able to find the corms easily by then. It would be easier to divide them in the Spring after they've finished flowering. Is there anything wrong with that?

Better done once the leaves have died down. Then you can still find them under the dried leaves and digging therm up should not harm the roots.

I agree.  spring time, after flowering is done and their leaves have gone brown.  How are you supposed to find them in autumn?

  • Thanks for the input: I'll do it once the leaves have gone brown.

No idea how you're meant to split them in the autumn, but that's what it says on some websites.
