Help - my physalis is dying

image

Hello everybody,

Iam very new to this whole gardening thing - in fact, we don’t even have a garden, so my gardening experience hasn‘t extended beyond growing some purple carrots in a pot and trying to grow some physalis.

Unfortunately my physalis seems to be dying VERY fast and I have no clue what to do about it or why. I am in Sydney and we’re in the middle of summer right now. I planted my seeds in some pre-fertilized soil about three to four months ago. In the beginning my plants were growing fabulously and looked  healthy, however now all my leaves seemed to have dried up (even though I am watering regularly, depending on how dry the soil feels) and fallen off the stalks and the ones that are still on there are currently in the process of turning brown. They are sitting on the balcony and so far I had them placed mostly in the shade

I am thinking maybe the fertiliser is used up? I hope someone can help me understand what is happening.

Thank you!

It's very hot in Sydney at the moment (lucky you);  Have you tried spraying your plant as well as watering well?

Keep up the fertilizer, but don't overdo it or it will be like overfeeding a sick person.

    Hi Welshonion,

Thank you you for your response! No, I haven‘t tried spraying the leaves themselves. I will give it a go and also buy some more fertiliser. Is it best to keep them in the shade or do they need some sun exposure?

As it is so hot there (I so wish I was in Sydney!) I think I would shade the plant if possible.

  • I agree with Welshonion.

Also, how big is the pot?  Physalis develop quite a large root structure ... I suspect that by now it has outgrown the pot where you started it off as seedlings.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Considering that the plant closest to the sun is the one that is doing worse than the others, I think the soil in the pot gets to hot. Dark containers might look good, but they become saunas in sunlight, effectivly cooking the roots.

Wrap some cloth around the container to protect it from sunlight.
