There's a perennial sow thistle which spreads from thick white roots, a bit like creeping thistle - and also a bit like perennial poppy roots. I think this looks rather like it, I'm afraid.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
I don’t think it’s a poppy, I’ve got a fair selection in my garden and the only one it resembles is a mystery oriental poppy with leaves that shape, unfortunately like most perennial poppies they are furry, so it’s not that.

That looks more like a type of sow thistle to me.

I think it looks like perennial papaver. Mine at least looks a lot like that.
