Ivy in Hawthorn Hedge

would it be suitable to spray my Hawthorn Hedge with a systemic weed killer whilst it is still dormant to kill time off the ivy, without damaging the hedge ?

any advice ?

    No.  It'll kill anything green that it lands on.

    Just cut the ivy stems at the base and leave the stems to dry out and die.   You may need to keep cutting till it gives in and stops re-growing but it will die if there are no leaves to feed the roots.  Pull up what you can when the trees go.
