Beech hedging

We live in a semi detached house & have just just paved our driveway. We have put a new 4ft fence which we share with our neighbours. He has now planted alongside a beech hedging & is letting it grow up to 7ft for his privacy. Our concerns are will the roots damage our new paving, drains & even foundatio of our house as it is only 2ft away. Can anyone please advise.

I don't think so. 7 ft in height should be fine. In terms for pipes/drains underneath, I can't comment, but at 7ft is unlikely to damage foundations and paving.

7ft won’t cause any problems as the height limits the roots, and birds absolutly love nesting in beech which will in turn help keep slugs and snails down in your garden.

I don't think you have anything to worry about Lorraine, my mum and dad's neighbour has a beech hedge about 6 feet high, close to their house, and they've never had any problems.

Much better a beech hedge than leylandii conifers any day! image

I believe 6ft 6 inches (2 metres) is the legal limit for hedges, so you could ask him to take it down to that height if you're on good terms with him. Unless he's very tall, most people wouldn't be able to see over a 6ft hedge, so 7ft is a bit unreasonable.  Having said that beech is lovely and in winter is more see-through than most.
