Hydrangea
Hello all. It is time to prune as I live in the south west. Through the winter and into February the plant is still in flower with a few dead blooms.Lots of foliage. I am confused about the pruning for this year.Normally I just prune to a lower bud .Any advice would be welcomed.

I too, live in the south west but this year I'm going to hang fire on pruning the hydrangeas. Partly in view of the weather forecasts and partly because last year I pruned at the recommended time back to the green buds as you say and then a severe unexpected frost got them and blackened all the top growth.
So I had to prune again which is quite a fiddly job on three bushes, but they did flower just as well. I just don't want to have to the job twice!
I've just looked out of the window to check and mine don't have any foliage left and are certainly not still in flower so you must be further south west than me! I'm in Bath.
Living in Eastern England and forecasting a bitter week ahead , I'm expecting damage to quite a few things . Got away lightly so far , so fingers crossed .
I also live in the South West, I will prune them at the end of March. If I prune any earlier I risk frosts getting to the top bud, they turn black and I have to do it again, as I have 50 of them I’m never in a rush.
I live over the channel - also in the south west and we haven't pruned our hydrangeas yet either. We waited until March last year to prune them and will probably do the same this year - we are also forecast to have some colder weather next week - I would wait until any chance of frost has passed before chopping anything that isn't fully hardy.
