Pruning Flowering Currant

I have a large Flowering Currant bush which has large buds on it at the moment.

When is the best time to prune this as there are some largish branches that I would like to cut back.

Immediately after flowering finishes as it flowers on wood produced the previous year.   Take the large branches back to the main stem if you like and trim the rest back by a third to a half.

  • Prune it immediately after flowering ... take out the oldest stems ... up to a third of the total stems in the whole plant ... cut them hard back to an outward facing bud.

  • So nothing now?

  • Not now ... if you prune now you'll lose the flowers ... it flowers on wood produced in the previous year.

If you like the flowers, be patient.  If not, just take out the whole bush and plant something more attractive with a longer season of interest.
