Hedges and Rust

We stored a car for a friend while they are away, it stood 3 foot or so away from a hedge which is 6ft tall for just over 12 months. When it was collected it was noted rust had started on that side in the drain away and under the wheel arches on the side near the hedge.

So the question is what effect has a hedge or other plants such as trees on cars.

Would covering the car make a difference?

  • A hedge won't/can't affect a car except in the way that a wall or fence would also do ... ie hinder sunlight and air circulation and slow down the drying of areas after rain.

If a car is going to be 'stood up' outside in a damp shady spot for any length of time it should be prepared, especially if it's going to be over the winter ... there used to be stuff you could apply to wheel arches and the underneath etc ... I expect there still is ... then a good waxing of the bodywork occasionally should be enough for a car in good condition ... If it's got some bodywork damage already a good quality cover, properly secured, is a good idea.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
