Borderline, don't magnolias bleed if pruned in late Winter, early Spring. I thought the advice from the RHS was to do any magnolia pruning in late Summer? But I agree with you about removing at least a metre diameter of grass around the base of the tree. It needs a good feed and is having to compete with the grass for both food and water.

Hi Jekylandhide, normally most deciduous ones are best pruned in the late summer time, and this is the best time to reduce chances of bleeding, but Grandiflora flowers much later into the high summer into autumn, so most of pruning on Grandifloras really should be done in early spring time.
Thanks Borderline. We have a man in my area that helps out in people's gardens and he'll prune magnolias just whenever he feels like it! Never seems to do them any harm though, they always look good.
