Sick aloe dicotoma
i have a potted aloe dicotoma, native to South Africa, in my house for the winter in Oregon. The leaves are getting a brown Looking area at the base that spreads across the attachment to the trunk and kills the leaf. I suspect it is a fungus but i’m Not sure. It is spreading quickly. I am spraying it with 3% hydrogen peroxide to no effect. Any ideas out there?

Hello Eric73
Aloe dichotoma , along with others of the genus require quite cool and dry conditions at this time of year .
Are you watering it too much ? My three large Aloes ; ferox , marlothii and brevifolia all stand in an unheated greenhouse and kept absolutely bone dry from October to April , undergoing cold damp days with moderate night frosts .
I understand parts of the US have had it pretty bad this year (an understatement)?? I don't know how Oregon has fared during the winter , but keeping your plant maybe too warm is having an adverse affect .
I'm in Eastern England , where up to now we havn't really seen a winter as such .
OK so maybe I should put it out in the green house and ignore it till spring. Maybe the lower temperatures will kill whatever bug is bothering it. I hope the main stem of the plant is strong enough to rebound. I have always struggled with succulents from extreme dry environments. It is interesting that my aloe placata and plicatilis plants are OK. i think it is a matter of degree. They live in just slightly more moist parts of South Africa.
