Thick White Slime in Hole!

Hello!

I have just moved into my very first flat and with it have a small garden! :) I'm excited to get into a bit of gardening but so far am not having a whole lot of luck. I have a few raised flower beds which I planted daffodils in, but seem to have a fox/cat issue that they keep getting dug up!

We also have a couple of little trees, but again, recently there has been a hole dug around the roots of the tree.

Today I went out to try and do a bit of tidying and noticed that in the hole there's now this really thick, slimy substance in the hole, and what looks like thin mould above it? (see attached pic) I have absolutely no knowledge on what this could be, so was hoping someone may be able to point me in the direction a) what this is a and b) do I need to get rid of it (and how)?!

Thank you in advance, really want to start a nice little garden space and currently feeling very out of my depth!

Cheers,

Beth :)

It looks like a fungus to me maybe an old Puff Ball or such, but It's likely  someone who is better informed will come along soon.

Soil in a garden is normally a self contained eco-system containing many millions of fungal spores , bacteria and many other living organisms . These normally 'co-operate' with each other , building up a beneficial growing medium to most plants in our gardens .

However , sometimes the balance can be upset , especially after a wet winter . Standing or poor draining water can lead to an excess of certain fungal moulds which can appear on the surface or just beneath . They normally have no detrimental affect on adjacent plants .

My advice would be to leave alone . As for the mystery holes , probably feral cats or foxes like you say .
