Mystery Plant
Just taken on a polytunnel at my allotment site and the door was blocked by this plant. Any ideas what it is please.

Thank you very much. It will be moved and yes it is a damp shady spot.
Careful though, they are not fully hardy, well not here anyway. I dig mine up and over winter in the greenhouse.
A really beautiful plant.

It is a beautiful plant, I'm surprised it's thrived the ground is very boggy and we have had some pretty cold weather.
South African in origin but surprisingly hardy here (E.Lincs) ; flowered mine only twice in hot summers (chocolate brown flower spike scented of vanilla) ; quite nice but as stated above by Freddies Dad , grown mainly for its attractive foliage which normally lasts well in a mild winter .
PS If 'blasted' by a severe winter and cut to base , they readily regenerate in the early summer .
Thanks Paul. It is very attractive growing against the poly- tunnel, fairly sheltered. Fingers crossed we have a good summer and it flowers!
