This is for 2018, I thought 16/17 was a bit out of date.

All you have to do, Linda, is.... ask Google to translate Many Happy Returns in to Greek!  image

I followed your advice to Linda, Danae, and got this:

    Many happy returns          Χρόνια πολλά

I thought, right but not the same... number of words!  So, I googled the 2 Greek words separately: Χρόνια   years

    Πολλά    many

    I thought????

Is this what the Greeks call Laconic?

As I don't have your privilege of being half Greek, I wonder if you could enlighten me, please!

  • Hi Sam, yes it's Laconic all right!  It implies, "May you live for Many Years

It is a longevity wish, used for birthdays, namedays, Christmas, Easter and National days.  Christmas and Easter also have their own specific wishes, as well as the general , Χρόνια πολλά.

Let me know when your birthday is and I will send you a very special card. image

I take Sam to be a contracte form of Samantha.  I don't know of a saint called Samantha; so I imagine you cannot have a Nameday and no card either! image

    Clearer, I hope!image

  • I've just listened to the pronunciation provided by Google.  RIDICULOUS!

What an interesting range of knowledge we have on this forum!  image

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

     Isn't it wonderful?

We are all here, of course, because of our interest in gardening; and we are very lucky that so many members of this forum are very generous, helpful and kind.  However, we do also have people who are specialists in other subject areas and I find what they have to say most interesting.

Some have a great sense of humour too!
