Tree for my Dad
Hi everyone
I'm looking for some advise on choosing a tree. My Dad passed away at the end of last year, and I would really like to plant a tree in my garden for him.
The thing that I have in the back of my mind is that if we move (which we wouldn't do within the next 5-10 years, but maybe further down the line) I would like to take it with me.
I would rather have it in the ground than in a pot. Could anyone recommend anything that wouldn't get too large, and wouldn't mind being moved at some point.
We live in the Channel Islands, so it's fairly mild. However, our garden can get quite windy. It would be lovely too if it had blossom in the spring.
Thank you in advance
Anna

Hi Anna, are you a Jersey Bean, Guernsey Donkey or from one of the smaller islands? I'm a Bean myself
I know you said you would prefer it in the ground but a much better and easier solution for you in my view and one that would allow you to move it in to a sheltered spot in the winter and take it with you should you move would be an Acer in a pot.
I had an Acer for xmas from my daughter in a pot. Not too big at the moment about 3.5 feet high but they look great in the summer and of course you can move it around as the fancy takes you.
Whatever you decide to do I think its a great idea to have something to remember your dad by and what better than something you can tend to and talk to your dad whilst doing so when pottering in the garden .

Love to Anna and Ian ?
i agree with Kili an acer in a pot would be perfect. I had a beautiful one in a pot for years. Just be mindful from having it in a windy spot ?
Thanks everyone. I think you're right about it being in a pot. I just liked the idea of it growing in the ground, as it felt more permanent (although, if we move, that's exactly the thing I don't want!)
I like acers, but my partner has made himself a kind of "acer corner" so we have quite a few. I almost wanted something completely new so it feels special, although I'm going to have a look at some different types of acers as I'm sure there must be something different to what he has already.

Another option would be to grow a tree from which you can take cuttings (elder, hazel, lilac, apple), or propagate from berries or fruit (rowan, hawthorn, oak) so you leave the tree you plant now but take a part of it with you if and when you move
“It's still magic even if you know how it's done.”
I love the idea of something you could take cuttings from as then I could take one for my mum and brother.
Thank you for all your suggestions
