Strange eggs in my vegetable garden

I live in Phoenix, AZ. I noticed these hatched eggs when I went over to my garden but I did not see any animals around the yard.

They look more like a type of Earthstar fungus to me.
However this forum is UK based ... you'll probably get better information from a naturalist local to your area.
