Prunning fuchsia in january

Can I prun an over grown fuchsia now, without causing it damage? It's about 6 foot and hasn't been seen to properly for a few years.

Many thanks Harriet

I always wait until the end of February.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Agree with Lyn.  If you prune it now that might encourage it to shoot early during a mild period.  If those shoots then get frosted, it will do the plant no good at all and you may lose it.  If you really do need to prune now, keep an eye out for new shoots and, as soon as you see any, fleece it whenever a frost is forecast.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

I have several large shrub Fuchsia and find taking them down about one third after flowering stops wind damage, then wait until March here in the N.E. and prune well back. Taking them down to around two feet is not detrimental to the plant as they spread again as all the tiny shoots turn into flowering branches. A mulch after pruning does them the world of good then a light trim will keep them nicely rounded, I love them and have some quite old ones.
