Weeds in my lawn

Hi all,

I moved into a new build with a mound of mud for a garden in June. I planted seed in September, and the grass grew quite well, but with it came a load of weeds, definitely too many to remove by hand. I'm not sure what type of weeds they are but I can take pictures if necessary. What would be the best solution to removing the weeds without killing the grass? I understand weed and feed is a thing, I just have no clue which products to buy.

This is my first time owning a garden so apologies for my lack of knowhow. I'd really like a nice lawn by the summer if I can.

Regards,

Simmo

    Hi Simmo and welcome image

Nothing you can do to the lawn at this time of year ... it's best to stay off it as much as you can in the winter or it'll soon turn back into a sea of mud.

When the weather dries up a bit and warms up a bit too the grass will begin to grow ... that's the time to apply some weed & feed ... there are various brands available at DIY stores and garden centres etc, but I find them all pretty much of a muchness ... the thing that you must do is measure the lawn and apply it at exactly the right rate ... I mark out the lawn in approx square metres with strings and canes and weigh the appropriate amount of W&F in a plastic cup and mark the amount with a Sharpie so that each time I use exactly the same amount.  If you apply too much you'll scorch and kill the grass image  Every year we get people posting photos of their black lawns asking us what's gone wrong image

Follow the instructions on the pack image

I think I've made it  sound a bit more complex than it actually is ... image

  • Yeah time of year was actually something I was meant to ask in my initial post. Thank you for the information. I know there are a tonne of brands out there and hadn't a clue which to choose from, I have quite a large garden it's around 16 metres by 14 I think and I will take your comments on board when spreading it out, thank you very much.

I also need to put a little bit more seed down as there are some patchy bits, would the weed and feed kill off the new seed, should I weed and feed first/should I seed first?
