One of our regular hogs has been visiting almost non-stop though the winter. Unfortunately we have a rat too and trying to ‘get’ him is proving very challenging. I have two lockable bait boxes but have elected to have snap traps in them as bait can and has been taken out in the past which leaves other animals, including the hogs, at risk of poisoning.
However all the time the hog food is out the traps are going untouched. Ideally I’d stop putting the food out which would probably force the rat into looking elsewhere (the traps) but the hog is small and I don’t want to take the risk of him not getting food and not making it through the winter.

We pour the poison directly down the holes with a funnel then cover with slate. I’ve never seen a poisoned rat above ground.
I use lockable bait boxes with wax coated blocks.
Poison should never be out in the open so birds etc cannot access it.
Mine are the plastic box type which allows you to thread the bait blocks onto wire inside so they cannot be dragged away.
No solution is absolutely foolproof but take reasonable precautions to keep everything safe.

Maybe this is what you need.
