That's Viburnum tinus, not Eleagnus. It does very well in the alkaline conditions around here. Maybe not so keep on the acid soil that suits your Rhododendrons etc?

  • I will trim it lightly as suggested, but this autumn is going to be the last chance saloon for this shrub. It is good and healthy looking, and as I say, I hate to dig up any healthy plant, but my garden isn't huge and this big green blob at one end needs to perform.Would giving it a feed help do you think?

  • Got loads of time! Love to garden all day everyday. I suppose it would survive being dug up and given to someone else. That is more palatable than throwing it out. Never heard of Freegle.

I hate to tell you but I had a Viburnum tinus for years in my old  house but it just never flowered. I have one here in the south west and it flowers nearly all year round. Could it be something to do with whether it is male or female as in Holly bushes? Only female produce berries.

No, that won’t be the reason it didn’t flower.  Viburnum tinus does not have separate male and female plants like holly. It is hermaphrodite … https://pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Viburnum+tinus#:~:text=Viburnum%20tinus%20is%20an%20evergreen%20Shrub%20growing%20to,pollinated%20by%20Insects.%20The%20plant%20is%20not%20self-fertile.
