Muscari problem?

Hi everyone,

This is my first post - nice to meet you all.

I planted Muscari Valeri Finnis bulbs in October of last year. I planted 4 bulbs in small terracotta pots with quite a bit of drainage and left them through the autumn and up until now in the garden. It has been quite wet in Somerset but the drainage seemed to work well.

As I expected very quickly within a few weeks the bulbs had sent up leaves. However, the leaves have now started turning yellow and are dying. I assumed this would happen after the bulbs had flowered in spring? Instead, the leaves seem to be dying now right before I would have expected them to come into bloom?

I've brought them inside to see if this makes a difference. Was I wrong perhaps to leave them outside in pots during the winter so far? Is there any hope of them coming into flower this spring?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I'd put them back outside in a sheltered spot ... they won't be very happy inside ... is the compost kept moist?

Have you fed them? What sort of compost are they in? Yellowing leaves can be a sign there's not enough food for some reason

  • Thanks dovefromabove I shall move them back outside. The soil has been consistently moist and not waterlogged since planting...

Thank you Raisingirl. The compost was a multipurpose mix and regretfully no, they haven’t been fed since planting. What would you suggest? A top dress with more compost?

I would give them a liquid feed, ideally. I use a seaweed feed but there are plenty of different ones - a balanced general purpose feed will be fine. I'm not sure that's the problem, but it's worth a try.
