New Herb Garden

I have some raised vegetable beds and behind is a piece of 'scrap' ground.  I would love to create this into a herb garden but not sure how to go about this.  Our ground is quite heavy clay.

    Hi Claire,

How much light does this area get?

Do you want to grow culinary or medicinal herbs or a mixture of both?

When you say 'scrap' ground, is it just ground that you haven't yet used, or is it 'scrap' as in a problem with it?

  • Hi,

The area gets a lot of light as it's south facing.  It used to be part of our veg bed, but since having the raised beds it's just been left.  There isn't a problem with it although in the winter it gets a bit 'wet'!

Ideally I'd like to grow both types of herbs.

It's all about the size of the area and what you want to grow in the area. You could plant up the area like you would in a traditional herbaceous border or have them confined inside a knot style border which is more formal and tends to be colour themed and more controlled. Like all new borders, spend time to work the soil over and add grit into the area to get the soil as free draining as possible. Although some plants like damper soils, on the whole, you can't go wrong with more drainage.

Improve the soil as much as you can. South facing is excellent. Raised beds will be good for the Mediterranean type herbs. Do your research and find which herbs like which conditions and it should work well.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
