Xmas tree help

morning,

i have inherited this xmas tree from my neighbour who was throwing it away. Now it definitely needs a water so have stood it in a box with water and not doing anything else for the time being.

the roots have broken through the pot and there’s is only minimal needle drop.  How much bigger can the pot be that I move it into and are there any top rips so I can give it  the best chance.

id like to be able to bring it into the house next xmas

keep it watered and re-pot in spring to a pot a couple of inches wider than the one its in now and hope for the best

  • I have read the main problem with potted xmas trees is that they dry out, particularly in the summer. Therefore have a plan in mind how you are going to keep it watered during the long dry summer we are bound to have :)

  • I bought one from Morrison's and went to repot it only to find there was no roots it had been chopped off and just stuck in a pot of compost , the funny side is like a fool I was watering it .

Some Christmas trees have been grown in pots ... others have been dug up from the field  and put in pots for Christmas and often they've suffered a lot of root damage and rarely recover.

The ones that have been grown in pots are usually more expensive than the 'containerised' ones because they've taken much more looking after in the nursery.

Looking at the picture , it might be that the apical stem has already died off , can't really tell .

Stand in a cool semi-shaded position in your water tray for the summer ; you may be lucky .
