Hmmm............Garrya elliptica has frequently been described as one of the dullest evergreens available .
Not a particularly attractive shrub in any way or form .
On a brighter note , and with 'proper' pendulous catkins , take a look at Itea ilicifolia . Not as tender as reputed and can be quite stunning when well grown .
We went back to take a daylight look at this plant with the lovely catkins. Perhaps it was a shrub but looks like it has had no pruning, so has grown into a straggly tree approx. 8 - 10 foot tall but not at all dense - just some thick branches with green leaves and these long catkins. It is sheltered by a wall in parts. I couldn't find any mention of birds on these sites, but thanks for sharing the info.
