Ideas required
Hi. I'm not a great gardener but have joined in the hope of some assistance. Would anybody have any ideas on what I could grow on this pebbles area of my garden. As you can see it' in the shade of two rather large trees. If need something quite manageable and that looks nice all year around. Many thanks

Do you know what is under that slate covering? Is it soil immediately underneath or with a type of weed membrane between slate and soil? Helps to know the type of soil too and which way the garden faces out to.
How big do you want the things to grow? Evergreen or deciduous? Perennials, annuals or shrubs?? Scented or not? The list of questions grow longer but you do need to answer these 4 before we can narrow it down for you.
Hi. Thank you all for responding. Under the slate is a membrane and under that was soil but I dug a lot of it out and flattened right down. I just want something that looks nice and isn' too much effort. The problem with the chippings is that when the leaves come down it is almost impossible to get them up as you end up taking a lot of the chippings up too. I would say not too tall. It was all bushes of some sort originally when we moved in. Thanks
Lisa, I'm trying to work out what you mean by "dug a lot of it out". I'm assuming you dug over the soil underneath the membrane and you have removed the membrane? If not, please let me know. Either way, keeping the slate covering can be a pain if you have a deciduous tree. The area space doesn't look big either so I recommend perennial plants that should look after themselves once planted in. The occasional tidy up or pulling out of anything you don't want throughout the year. I have not recommended any shrubs because I think your space may become too crowded.
Search for hardy Geraniums for shade, and you will get plenty to choose from, so take a look. The aim is for interesting foliage in different textures and shades. In partially shaded gardens, cool colours and whites will glow, extending your garden. Heucheras, Tiarellas and Alchemilla Mollis are low maintenance plants. Bergenia Cordifolia will form large clumps of evergreen glossy foliage. In cool areas, they can flowers for long periods. Have a look at these plants to see what you think. You can fill in gaps with bulbs and cylcamens.

Thank you all. I've been having a look and think I like the idea of something like these image's and have googled a few plants I think may work. I also have rather large borders on the other side of the garden so could tie in nicely. Thanks again
