When should you give up on a tree

I love ivy, but you can end up with quite a dense shade. And not much rain touches the floor.  Definitely enchanting.  I guess I need to learn where and when it's applicable.

Thanks for all those suggestions.  Very chalky and on a slope, so the soil doesn't retain much water.  Ground covering ivy probably helps a little here in that regard.  Brambles are the surprise spreader in the sunnier spots, they grow, arc and fall and then do so again.  Quite clever.

Update,  the tree sent out some shoots, then gave up, was covered in shrooms, not enough light and water for a comeback. Dog wood is trying to start afresh there now. And the new light is helping other plants.
