Paul B3, tongue in cheek or not you are spot on, this is an excellent gardening forum although this is the POTTING SHED and as any gardener knows who has had the privilege of sharing one a place of discussion on many and varied subjects.
Gardens are not made by deity of any description they are man made in our own image, we alter nature until the plants would not know their own roots as in Genus and not always for the best. Nature is a cruel force where everything lives because of something else, many are Symbiotic living in harmony others live on each other. We wonder why the Bees are dying out, butterflies no longer with us and other small creatures needed for our way of living disappearing, those of us of a certain age know why, we came from a time of hay fields, natural fertilising, resting land and mixing crops that were symbiotic. These days it is mass production, modify DNA and use of dangerous chemical and yet there are still people starving in this world, the only winners are the money men.
Yes it is a gardening forum and plenty of gardening gets done, we may talk a lot, may put the world to rights in the potting shed and discuss the often unthinkable but we also hold out a helping hand share our knowledge and on the whole do as little damage as possible.
If nothing else in this world I would be proud to be called a Gardener.
Agreed Frank ......... and at this time of year very few of us gardeners (except it seems the professional ones like Wonky) are out in the wind, rain and snow all day so we have time for inconsequential chit chat and the putting of the world to rights as only those in real touch with the fundamentals of this planet are able to do.
I would never 'continually pick up' on what someone says unless I was pretty sure that the reason they post is intentionally to 'stimulate debate' .... Mike and I have been disagreeing about some stuff for many years now and I don't suppose that'll change ... however we do seem to agree about some gardening matters.

Am I alone in being a trite suspicious of the 'Good-Old USA' , when currently run by the obviously unbalanced Trump .
Their nations motto , "In God we Trust" doesn't exactly inspire confidence . Aetheism in the US is not particularly welcomed .

Living in E.Lincs , the pressure on the farming community is well understood around here ; some are saying the prohibitive costs of chemicals is decreasing their use , which can only be a good thing !
Having worked alone for many years , I havn't had the pleasure of discussions in the 'potting-shed' , but it must be nice . Agree, a garden is a totally man/woman made artificial environment . Reversion is swift if let be .

Unfortunately I am out in the wind , snow and rain most days . Thirty years ago I decided I needed to be outdoors ; being close to nature (too close sometimes) , I chose gardening as a career . I had to take the rough with the smooth . Two years ago , got to know a like-minded individual and went into partnership . It is financially viable , customers get a good job done , and everyone seems content (especially the wife 'cos I'm out of her way for many hours) !
Paul that was part of my point ... some gardeners have to be out there ... my daughter WonkyWomble is a gardener on a beautiful private country estate ... this time of year is a busy time as the family are all there and a lot of entertaining is done and the gardens have to be immaculate, plus there are the beautiful winter lights, fountains etc to be set up and maintained and the woodlands to be tended .... she's out in all weathers.
Keep warm and dry folks!

Paul B3, I was not taking you to task just putting another facet on the Diamond. I too was an outside man Engineering and the Military are not normally indoor activity's. Having seen the desolation of the Middle East and parts of Africa I came to appreciate our green and very pleasant land and climate, when you have seen water rationed to the last drop and no rain in nearly two years you count rain a blessing and i would go out and work in it for the simple sensual pleasure, saying that, Luneburg in winter very nearly cured me.
My Father was a real old fashioned gardener all his life and I learned at his side he would say you cannot take out more than you put in which meant hard graft gardening no short cuts he was right as modern gardeners are now finding, without the effort it does not work. That is one of the good points of this forum they are in the main Gardeners who have done it the hard way they know their way around double digging and on your knees weeding and thinning, they pass on the knowledge happily even though we know some people think it is like TV, a garden in a day? Those programmes have a lot to answer for as they never show the mass of people who really do the work.
There are many who like Doves Daughter work through the bad weather as did my Farming relatives, cows do not milk themselves at Christmas, the festivities have to fit in with the work needed to keep a farm running, we always managed to have a merry time. "Oh well" back to the goose home made stuffing our own Ham potato's and veg from the garden !!! have you gone retrograde Franky boy?? Sorry memory lane again, it will be my Daughter cooking everything from M&S though she has promised me real cabbage cooked lightly with a blob of butter and sprinkled with bacon bits.
I agree with you entirely ! Far too many so-called 'gardeners' around here ; mainly people who've lost their jobs and can find nothing else to do .
Like you say , glitzy 'one-day makeover' programmes are a far cry from reality . Those behind the scenes rarely get any credit .
I believe there are no experts in this field ; gardening is strictly a learning curve , we've all made mistakes !
I am fortunate enough to be able to memorise a vast number of plant names and requirements ; errors are still made by myself and I'm the first to admit it . Thirty plus years in the trade and am still learning !
Your previous comments regarding warfare are particularly poignant ; my poor old grandfather fought in the Somme and somehow survived ; (I wouldn't be here otherwise) , rarely mentioned it and died aged 70 when I was just 6-years old . In later years I would have loved to have been able to absorb some of his knowledge and experiences of that fateful era . Sadly it wasn't to be . Only my somewhat hazy memories of him remain , plus one 100-year old photograph of his WW1 wedding .
But for believers, God is all powerful, therefore he must have created science along with scientists and given them all their knowledge. Therefore, God is the root cause of all the problems in the world, and we are just toys he uses until he's bored and throws them away.

Your daughter is obviously content with her career ; good luck to her !
Understandably she finds this time of year a bit of a trial ... but the glorious surroundings the rest of the year make up for it
