I measured the oak in my garden earlier today ..... came out as 114 years old .... so a mere youngster compared to Hostafan's.
It probably started life as a squirrel-planted acorn as we are the first people to garden here .... there was an old saw-mill here before we built our house. We've positioned our lounge window to look directly at this tree and it gives us a lot of pleasure ... and leaf mould!
It's just great for wildlife .... with flocks of jays noisily feasting on the acorns ... daredevil red squirrels ... and tawny owls perching on the branches on the look out for supper.
Started thinking about what was going on in the world when it was a sapling .... possibly WW1 .... votes for women in the UK .... the introduction of old age pensions.
It's an honour and a great privilege to own trees.

I meant to add to my earlier post the other thing you can try is to find a plant breeder who will name a plant after your nominated person. Roses are the classic but that tends to be very expensive. We had a golden coloured viola named after my parents for their golden wedding.
You can also have a star named after a loved one and the name will appear on star charts. It isn't tremendously expensive, but after my mum died, my daughter and I just picked a star for Gran. With the changing seasons I'm not sure which one it is now, but we know 'Gran' is still up there somewhere

I must add it wasn't MY garden, I just rented a cottage there.
I looked after the garden for about 3 years, and the oak, and the avenue of medlars did give me much joy.
