plant identity
A year or two ago this low growing palmate (for want of a better description) appeared in my garden lawn, it was quite small the first time I spotted it (6 inch tall) with only 1 or 2 shoots and I mowed it along with the grass, later in the year it came back so being curious I let it grow, it dies off in the winter months but I suspect next year it will be back again more vigorous.
The glossy green leaves have 7 fingers and are hard spiny edged and quite sharp, leaf stems have a red hue. any ideas ?

I thought Helebore as well but then you said it dies down in winter. If it is it may produce flowering stems soon if it hasn't done so already.
Thankyou Nutcutlet, I've been searching everywhere for it, my RHS encyclopedia doesn't have anything in looking like that.
Which now raises the question where the Helleborus did it come from? sorry couldn't resist.. but thanks again.
they're very free with their seeds.
It's not a very healthy specimen so you could easily not recognise it from RHS illustration. I have seen may unhealthy specimens

It looks a bit yellowish as well ; the old leaves are becoming a bit tatty now . If mine I'd lift it and replant in a good moist rich loamy soil . They do well in semi-shade ; flower buds should be showing anytime now for next early Spring .
