planting alliums, now or leave until spring

I ordered alliums in October but have only just received them, can I still plant now or should I wait until spring

The tall Alliums are winter growers so get them in as soon as possible. Put them in deep pots if the ground is frozen and grow cool.

  • I am planning on planting them in a row of large planters 50cm deep the soil is only frozen for the top 5cm do you think that will be ok

Should be. Just avoid burying the frozen soil when you plant.

  • If you don't plant them now, there's a good chance they will rot off. They start putting on roots at this time of the year and you can see these. I planted mine yesterday but I did so in pots. The ground was frozenimage

You won't see growth above the ground until spring with most alliums and they don't need to be in a frost free environment. They root in the autumn and early winter if warm enough, hence if you haven't planted them, you can see the roots shooting out. I planted mine a bit later than I should have really but then I rarely plant when I should as I never have enough time.

I'm glad you asked that as I have a bag of alliums that I'd forgotten about. But I haven't planted them yet as it has poured and poured with rain (SW France). The garden is a bog. Never thought about starting them in pots in the GH, obvious really.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
