Cosmos are annuals. That means that they germinate, flower, set seed and die. It's true that some can be sewn in Autumn and some, like cosmos, in Spring, but they do not die down for winter and pop back up again next year. You did well to save the seeds because you will be able to enjoy your cosmos again next year. Keep your seeds cool and dry and they will be all set to sow in Spring.
thanks for replies every one
ive got two Cosmos ( chocolate ) both have sprouted leaves after dying back
see pic of today
That's a different species to those mostly referred to as Cosmos
The pink/white annuals are Cosmos bipinnatus.
Chocolate cosmos is Cosmos atrosanguineus which is a perennial but not very hardy so look after it

Chocolate cosmos needs to be treated like a dahlia. If it has already started into growth, you will need it to be frost free.
Much more costive than a dahlia in my experience, have never had much luck with them.
Christopher Lloyd said he could never overwinter them. I rest my case m'lud!
