Chysanthemums

Supermarkets have many a potted mums for sale at the mo for £2.50 a pot.  They contain five plants too.

I know they have been fed on retardants to stunt growth and as i understand things they should if planted out next spring grow on as normal.

I've been trying to find and buy Korean Single hardy mums but can't find any online and these potted mums at the supermarkets very much resemble what a Korean single hardy mum looks like so i'm hoping this is true and that they do grow on outside in the spring and come true when they flower next autumn.

Thoughts and advice welcomed.

As you say, they will grow bigger. They may not be hardy. Have you tried Woolmans for chrysanth cuttings. Order in the winter for delivery in the Spring.

  • Halls of Heddon sell online and offer a range of hardy varieties. Might be worth a look.

  • Woottens also sell several single hardy chrysanthemum online and are a very reputable supplier.

  • Thank you for the replies and the suggestion of suppliers too and yes they advertise the ones i'm wanting to buy but they have been out of stock of the ones i'm wanting for over a year now.  I've revisited these websites several times and they’re always out of stock of the varieties i'm wanting.

Between Woottens and Heddons they have all the ones i want, phoned them a few times over the last year and all i get is that they don't know when they'll be back in stock.

I find the ones I’m wanting elsewhere too but never in stock.  I did find them in stock at a nursery in New Zealand (UK autumn 2016, spring in NZ) but the delivery charge was so much I would of needed a second mortgage.

The plants I’ve found in my local supermarket described as “Potted Mums” are the closest I’ve found to the varieties I’m looking for. I’m prepared to take a chance and give it a go.

I’ll keep looking online at Woottens and Heddons as well as elsewhere for another year.

    Thank you again.

  • Woottens have had a big shake-up ... they're only selling online and are no longer open to the public other than to collect orders at pre-arranged times ... plantings, poytunnels and all sorts of things are being expanded .... hopefully they'll have your plants back in stock before too long. image

I bought 2 pots of 3 mums last year for autumn baskets. They were still signs of life in the spring so I put the remains in the border and here they are..
The weird colouring is because I took the photo on 16/10 - the day we had the weird skies and these stood out so vividly - they're actually a wine red colour
