Earlier bulb growth and developement in other plants

I started doing my own little experiment where I applied different fertilizers to my onion plants.I noticed that some of the plants are bulbing earlier than the other.Im not really sure why this happens.Does it have something to do with the fertilizers or is there some other factor that causes this?I would like to know your thoughts regarding my experience.
