I could understand if it were summer and mosquitoes might use it for breeding, but not many of them about now!. They don't get much chance even in summer here, as my ducks and hens patrol any open water sources. I let rainwater collect in an container or two, very useful for dunking thirsty plants or trays of seedlings, never seen a mozzie larva in there!
I totally agree, although my hens are long gone.. But I did thinkit was a bit odd, he's a venerable 78 yrs of age soI didn't like to tell him off lol. I put out rain collectors all year round and I have 4 water butts.. I regard rainwater as a bonus after a dry summer..I gollect what I can over winter to give my sprong sowings a good start..y
Ours are covered too, they did get cleaned out in the summer because we had new conservatory roof and windows, had to move the butts. What do you guys do with them in the winter then, its sooo windy today if they were empty would be gone, dustbin has flown!
