Overgrown grass

I have recently moved into a new property, the grass was severely overgrown, since then it has been trimmed down but now I'm left with patches were there is no grass, mostly yellow in colour grass and thick straw like grass coming through. All I want is a nice green lawn so i can start planting some nice flowers ect, I'm very new to gardening so I do not have a clue were to start so any advice would be amazing, thanks

Nothing much will happen until spring. Grass has stopped growing now and will only start again with warmth and sunlight. If there is a mild spell over the next couple of months (assuming you are in the UK) you will see a little growth. Mow with the blades set on a high setting if it starts looking shaggy which could be in February in southern England but really it's a waiting game now.....Patience.
long grass always looks terrible after it's been cut.
Redwing is right
