Pruning a fatsia.

Hi all, my fatsia is getting a bit unruly and am wondering if I dare prune it around this time. I cut it right back by about a third 4 or 5 years back, and it responded wonderfully, but i’m Blowed if I can remember what time of year I did it. It has just “flowered” if you can call it that, So would now be a good time to cut it back?

thanks in advance,

Pat.

I'd leave it till spring or summer. Cold weather after pruning can do a bit of damage to any new growth, and that can be avoided if you wait till it's a bit warmer. image

You can remove stems right back at the trunk, if they're looking a bit rough. I do that quite often even through autumn and winter as they're unsightly.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you Fairygirl, it makes sense that cold weather will damage new growth, and they do tend to sprout fairly quickly once pruned. It can wait until spring.
