Rheum
in Plants
I planted a Rheum this spring/summer in our new bog garden. Once or twice the bog dried out for a few days and some of the leaves died. Now there are no leaves at all - in fact you cannot tell that there was a plant there (although there may be roots under the soil). My question is, is this normal, and will the plant grow again next year?

Mine disappears completely too, so normal.

Your Rheum is related to Rhubarb ....just like Rhubarb it vanishes in the winter and will reappear next spring.
Rhubarb is Rheum rhabarbarum .....yours is an ornamental one.

That is reassuring to know, thanks. It wasn't a cheap plant and I was concerned that it was money wasted. Will it be more robust and vigorous next year? We had no flowers this year and the leaves only lasted a few weeks before breaking off. Disappointing plant so far.
Yes it should come up next year with huge buds.

Probably too small to flower in the first year.
The clump will get bigger each year.
Do you know which one you bought?
Leaves can be green or red.
Flowers pink or white depending on which one you bought.
Make sure it is not underwater or too wet ..especially in winter.

mine is usually a wee bit late to show, so I stuck a stick beside it so I know where it is. Most other plants are up and about before it.
Look for the curled up buds on the crown near the surface, like "normal" rhubarb.
I grow this one.
Rheum Ace of Hearts. It does not flower, but I love the foliage.

Thanks for all your replies. I have just been outside to look (armed with torch) and the label says it is a Palmatum I think that is how it is spelt. I will put a stick marker where it is, so that I don't forget although we still have the label next to it too. I am re-assured now that it will return and I look forward to flowers perhaps next year. Yes we do have rhubarb growing in the veg patch so I should have realized that this Rheum would behave in the same way.
