Dahlias over winter
Hi folks, 1st posting for me !!
So,I have around 40 dahlias STILL in the ground at the minute,I'm in the Central Belt of Scotland.Last year I had half this amount and all were dug up, dried off and stored in a cupboard under the stairs for winter, my question is this......... should I get my backside moving and get all 40 tubers out of the ground now, we've had a few frosty days, and I can see quite a few more this winter too ,I don't want to lose them all,in particular Sunshine, Bishop of Llandaff,Happy "Wink" ,Tartan and Catching Fire as these are among my favourites. The soil and drainiage in my garden isn't the greatest, and the rain we had this year did the plants in the borders no good at all, though now we're into "Frosty" season should this be a problem for my dahlias ?? Do I go out and just pile compost on them and hope for the best ?? or get them all indoors ?? Any help and advice very much appreciated

I think you need to ask yourself if you really want 40 dahlias, if so then living where you do and taking in your type of ground, I would bring them in as you did last year.
If you don’t need 40 then you could bring in your favourites and pile mulch straw leaves whatever youve got and hope for the best.
Hi Lyn,thanks for replying, guess what, just been out and dug up at least 10 in the last hour,I couldn't chance losing them, especially my favourites !!! I actually want even more Dahlias to be honest lol,I love them, not just for the bees but for looking at too !!!
That’s the way to go, choose your favs and keep safe.
Do you get much trouble with slugs up your way?
If you want more dahlias I would lift them and there is a good chance some of them could be divided in spring to give you the extra you want.
