You can do it now but you need to think about crop rotation and maybe restrict manure to beds which will be growing potatoes and legumes such as peas and beans.    Unless your soil is very poor and sandy, brassicas shouldn't need it but may appreciate some lime just before planting as this helps counter club root.

Have a read of this article - http://www.allotment-garden.org/crop-rotation/four-year-crop-rotation-plan/

  • Thank you, I've found potatoes on one side of plot so I'm planting next year on opposite side

Hi I hope you get as much out of your allottment in your first year as I did many years ago. The fact it was left fallow for a year is a help and also that you have weeded.. Divided into plots is always good. Keep an allotment book too withdates and varieties planted and even yields for future planning..

I hope it all goes well.  Its a good time to deep dig and let the element break up the soil. A lot of people will lay down cardboard sheets weighted down and bits of old carpet.. It acts as a weed barrier so less work in the spring sowings..  Onions Shallots and garlic love manure dug in..

I have already planted my sets but may apply some straw n chicken manure in february to give them a bit of a boost..  I was given the poulty manure this week wish had it back in September lol but hey Give things a go..  The only downside with manuring is the weed seeds it often contains...

I am reduced to a small garden these days but I loved my allotment not to mention wonderful veg and fruit.. Good luck with your efforts.
