It's a vile disease ( I avoided the obvious pun there....) and shouldn't be dismissed as anything else.
In a 'smaller' comparison - I have mice in the garden who cause no problems and I love seeing them, but as soon as they start heading into the house - they'll be toast. Rats should never be ignored if they start getting too comfy, especially in a residential area.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I was a new poster to this forum, finding my way and posting how I felt. Absolutely no welcome at all from anyone just the stance that I'm wrong totally and finally.
I couldn't quite figure out which truly nasty person even brought my children, or my ability to raise children into the discussion but I seriously did not expect that on here! ITS A GARDENING FORUM
I felt my message to be bland enough ending with;
"Anyway it's your Rat and your problem so good luck with whatever you decide."
To qualify I have worked on and consulted for several Brown Rat eradications. Yes sometimes they are necessary and sometimes they are not. I do know what I'm talking about but obviously chose the wrong "forum" Were talking about a small hole by the side of a garage and for that I get strung up.
Hedgehogs are proficient diggers. I run a rescue. They will happily dig out of a pen through the soil in about the same time as it takes a rat to. They can't get through concreted etc like a rat though because they aren't 'chewers'.
We have rats in the garden. Am not convinced about the value of using poison. Would be concerned that it would also kill other rodents such as wood mice a and voles. Also, unless I kill them all, and there's plenty around, all I am creating is a gap for others to fill. Am less tolerant of them indoors.
I'm confused now.. I have seen both hedgehog & a rat in my garden (not together ..) today found a large hole underneath the fence. Put a large rock over it thinking rat. Then googled that hedgehogs do actually dig.. have I just accidentally locked out my hedgehog?

It’s just as well you haven’t got children!

just read your reply dave 125
still say in the time honoured phase
the only good rat is a dead rat
I am sorry you feel like that Dave, however the way you wrote, did suggest that Weil's disease was not a real issue and that was what annoyed me.
As I mentioned, I live in the country, next to water, so therefore I have rats.
I live quite happily with them and enjoy watching them, but when it comes to being inside, that will not be tolerated.
When you don't even know who's in the team
S.Yorkshire/Derbyshire border
dont worry dave 25,
i dared to disagree with the regular contributors to this forum as did bridgey 2012,.
all that i and bridgey said was that there was no need to grow sweet corn in blocks and that they would
grow as well in straight rows.
got slaughted for it .
my advice is just carry on putting your own views and have a broad back.
or better still go on one of the national allotment forums ,
they may well disagree with you but they will accept that you have a right to an opinion that differs from theirs
Couldn't it be some other type of burrowing animal?
Am less tolerant of them indoors.
