Protecting new trees

I've just ordered a replacement Bramley seedling tree to replace the one I planted 2 years ago, killed by dog wee. I will plant it in a different place, but the dog has to use the garden. I wanted to get a tree protector but need one that won't let urine through and stands out far enough from the tree to stop any urine reaching the bark and roots if he pees against the protector. I thought of buying a tall plastic container then cutting a hole in the base so that I can position it on the tree before I plant it. However, will the resulting lack of light damage the tree? I can't see anything commercial that will do.

  • Put half a dozen tomato canes around the base of the tree and fix a length of chicken wire to them.  If you make it a circle with a diameter of about a metre that should be plenty, and you can keep the circle inside clear of weeds and grass and then mulch and feed within the netting.

  • I'd suggest training the dog to pee against a provided pole in a specific area away from plants?
