Found gel like stuff in the backyard

I found this gel kid of stuff in my backyard today. It rained yesterday here in San Jose, California yesterday and not sure if it related. Any clue what this could be ? Thanks

It looks a bit like the gel they put in compost. This is supposed to hold water in the compost so the plants can use it to allow the plants to keep better watered in dry weather but the globules look too big.

I agree with that it does look like water retaining gel that has swollen up in the rain.

Thanks for replies and interesting comments:) I don't use any water storing crystals and so I wonder where they would have come from though.
