Salvia Amisted

Hi everyone, being a total novice gardener, I purchased 4 Salvia plants in October which came to me in full bloom. I planted them as per instructions and they have taken.

My problem is that I live on top of the Pennines in a rural village and the weather is beginning to turn frosty and cold.

Please can anybody advise me on what I should do next, leave well alone or cut back to ground level.

Due to the plants having fowers on each stem I've been unable to take cuttings.

I dig mine up each winter and keep them in a cold greenhouse [ Sheffield / Drbyshire border, 500 foot up ]

How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team

  • Hi Punkdoc, thanks for that, should I wait until flowering as finished?

Unfortunately I don't have a greenhouse but I've a cold frame will that surface?

  • Hi

I have the same plants. They are not fully hardy but they have come back each year. I leave them in the ground and mulch with 2 to 3 inches of bark chip around the plant about now, which gives it sufficient frost protection for where I live . Once flowering as ceased, I cut them to ground level. As I live in the Midlands possisbly the hard frosts are not comparative to where you are located, but I have not lost one of these beautiful plants to frost yet

  • Thanks for that Steve, I think I will follow your advise. Many thanks.
