Overgrown hedge - will it regrow if cut back hard now??

Hi, I have very large overgrown laurel I want to prune back hard. Will it be OK to prune now and it will regrow in spring?

Thanks

Brad

  • Thanks for the reassurance 'Dovefromabove'. If cut back by 50%in terms of width, back to bare leafless branches and shortened by 2 thirds in height the hedge will bounce back to life? Sorry to ask again just want to go ahead and cut right back in a week or two!

Last year (November 2016) , we cut back a colossal overgrown laurel hedge , reducing the branches by up to two-foot along the entire front to re-attain some uniformity . We had no doubt that it would re-grow from bare wood this spring . IT DID ; with a vengeance !!image

Go ahead , no problems .

  • Cheers 'Dovefromabove',will now go ahead with extensive cutting back of 17 foot long hedge, that is 7 foot wide, 12 foot high, down to 5 feet high and 4 foot wide!

In fact - you'll do it a service as it will rejuvenate it.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • You could cut the whole thing down to an inch off the ground and it will come back.

  • Cut it a good two feet shorter than you want it to be ... then you'll get good new top growth that can keep trimmed without getting your hedge trimmer blunted by hitting big woody branches.
